Tell us about your family.
I have two beautiful children, Marcus (25) and Nina (24). Both Marcus and Nina have cerebral palsy and are wheelchair-bound. They both have been a true blessing in my life.
What's a favorite childhood memory?
My most vivid childhood memory is from my third grade year. My father, who had just turned 50, had to have double by-pass heart surgery. He was one of the first 500 people to have the surgery. It was such a new thing that my teacher the next year, Mrs. Cooney, had him come in for show and tell! Imagine my horror when my dad came in wearing SHORTS and a button-down shirt so everyone could see his scar. (This was 1971, and dads weren't supposed to wear shorts in public!) Because of this surgery, I had my dad for seven more years.
Why did you become a teacher?
I wanted to be a teacher since the 4th grade. Mrs. Cooney, my 4th grade teacher, made learning so much fun. I had always been a tough customer for my previous teachers as I was a bit hyperactive. Mrs. Cooney apparently understood me and was able to teach me in such a way as to keep me engaged and in my seat! Because of her love of teaching, I knew I wanted to teach someday. I wanted to be just like her.
What do you love about SRCS?
I love teaching at SRCS. Not only do I get to do what I love, I get to teach my kids about my Lord and Savior!! It doesn't get any better than that!
